Tazara! Some last impressions

Who was Mary? Whoever she was she no longer opens her restaurant at Dar es Salaam station.

The clock at Dar es Salaam but we were unable to tell the time

It really ought to have said Chinese in Africa because everywhere we went in Tan-Zam they talked about them, the influence and the presence but we rarely saw them

Our faithful journal keeper

The man who changed the points

Embankment

Not just one but two stationary trains! Bet I've got the spelling wrong!

The man trying to load his wares simply stood on other people's wares!

One of Tazara's few maintenance options.

Some people we met along the track

Chatting to the Koreans

Sunset over the African bush

The end of the journey - 3 a.m. night three after the bedding had been whisked away

Jessica packed and ready to disembark but determined to sleep on

There at last 60 hours after we started and 12 hours late!

The empty train ready to turn round and go all the way back again. We were left with nothing but admiration for the train staff who against all the odds kept the train going. The drivers often have to make and mend and improvise along the track in the middle of nowhere and the train staff who looked after is worked tirelessly in very trying circumstances. For meTazara was a picture of Africa where almost everything is an effort but somehow they keep going. TAZARA you were a challenge to us 60 somethings but we wouldn't have missed you for the world.

Do I really have to wake up?

Our first Zambian dawn

Still smiling at the end!
